Soma Records gives something back to the city that spawned it, with this daylong exploration of the music industry. Soma Skool was conceived to demystify the mechanics behind the process involved in making and releasing a record.

Embracing all aspects 'from demo to final release', the aim is to stimulate a new wave of talent, by educating those with a curiosity in the music industry and a desire to learn. Witness a track being recorded, watch the cover artwork and the video being made, with explanations of the processes involved

THE SOUND STUDIO WITH SIDEWINDER

Soma offshoot Fenetik brings in Sidewinder, acclaimed producer/DJ whose first release was made in his own bedroom! Now his debut album 'Resolution' is being released on Fenetik and Sidewinder shares his techniques and methods behind making a track. Topics discussed will include shoestring budget equipment and getting the most out of it, using samples and making new music out of old, mixing and making it sound right and structure. This will be brought together and demonstrated via a specially conceived track by Sidewinder, which will come together into a finished edit by the end of the session.

THE GRAND FINALE
A grand finale with the finished track played in a special DJ (Soma DJ) set, using final scratch, will end the day. This will be presented and the day summed up by Stuart Cosgrove, Director of Channel 4 Nations & Regions.

THE ARTWORK STUDIO WITH 2 FLUID

Glasgow based designers 2 Fluid, who have worked with Simple Minds and Slam, explain what is considered when putting together CD artwork. Learn more about issues affecting the design of a front cover, from making the visual fit with the vibe of the track, to making it stand out in a shop. Here 2 Fluid present key issues relating to artwork, demonstrated visually through the design of the front cover for Sidewinder's track, coming together into a finished product by the end of the day.

THE VIDEO STUDIO WITH 4MW

4 Minute Wonders, the music video filmmaker initiative that gives budding video producers their shot to make a real music video, lays bare what is important in music video production, in sync with music and artwork production.

4 Minute Wonders have recently completed a video for Primal Scream and are working on a video for The Proclaimers and are here to share their techniques and skills.

Video filmmaking issues will cover pre-production (the development of an idea, treatment writing, storyboarding) to post production (editing and presentation) where the final video will run alongside the finished track.

IDEASFACTORY PLAYROOM

IDEASFACTORY Scotland co-ordinate this separate room, with rolling workshops that aim to prove that a career with the music industry is viable should you not even have a musical bone in your body! Other avenues are open, from music photography to journalism, from artist management to film music. These workshops will be thought providing, encouraging participants to realistically consider a career in, or relating to the music biz. Professionals who have been there and done it will give talks, partake in panel interviews and Q & A sessions.

IDEASFACTORY Scotland is a new initiative by Channel 4 to help young people get in, and get on in, the creative industries. Supported by Scottish Enterprise and Highlands & Islands Enterprise, this a blended online and offline resource covering all aspects of the creative industries in Scotland.

THE PLANNING OF THE RECORD

Key figure from the major arenas of the music industry shall explain the less creative and more businesslike concerns relating to releasing a track. These sessions shall take into consideration important release information from artist and relations right through to post-release. Topics discussed will get to the bottom of distribution and how to get your record in the shops, marketing and getting people aware of your artists, publishing and post release.

GMAC

The Glasgow Media Access Centre (GMAC) is Scotland's longest running open access facility for film makers. GMAC provides facilities hire (hires out cameras, mics and provides editing facilities), provides film production related training, provides information on the TV and film industry and runs Cineworks; Scotland's entry level short film scheme and Digicult, a scheme for more established film makers.

RADIO MAGNETIC - INTERNET RADIO DEMONSTRATION

Scotland's premiere dance music internet broadcaster, Radio Magnetic, will host a 30 minute Q & A session on the function and application of streaming media, particularly as applies to the music industry. This session will demonstrate how streaming media works, from original sound source, to server, to end user, looking at a variety of streaming media modules available (all free to download).

Aware that different organisations have different budgets and requirements, Radio Magnetic will present both high and low budget options and show how these can be adapted to suit individual demands. In addition to the 30 minute Q&A session Radio Magnetic will have a stall active throughout the day where anyone may ask questions and see more detailed demos. The day will end with a streaming media demo, broadcasting the final track from one Arch to the other.

THE Q & A DJ SESSIONS
